Well, we always knew that being part of Hackness Ladies' Choir was good for us - but it's official!

THE HACKNESS lADIES CHOIR DELIGHT RESIDENTS
We were delighted to be entertained by the Hackness Ladies Choir on Tuesday 11th December. Conducted by Ralph Earwicker and accompanied on the piano by Frank James and Elise Curran, the choir sang a selection of Christmas songs and carols. The Combe Hay Lounge was filled to capacity with residents enjoying the music and singing along with the choir. A great evening was enjoyed by all.

Poppy Installation
Hackness Ladies' Choir is proud to support Hackness Village Hall Committee's ambitious project to set up a poppy installation in November 2018, commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War. This spectacular transformation of the village and the hall will involve some 45,000 poppies and extend for approximately half a mile! These pictures shows some of the poppies that have been made so far:
Eskdale Festival
On 7th April, 2018 the choir took part in its first competition, The Eskdale Festival. It was really quite nerve-wracking as we were in competition with some very experienced and talented choirs, but we more than held our own;
The first class in which we took part was entitled "Christmas in April" and we were placed 2nd, with 85 points ( the choir that was placed 1st received 87 points) The adjudicator was particularly impressed with the carol "Star of Wonder" which had been written for us by Suzan, a hugely talented member of our choir who was with us singing on the day
We were unplaced in the "Recital" class with 84 points (the choir placed 1st was awarded 89 points). Both scores are in the "commended" category, which according to the British and International Federation of Festivals marking system means "a convincing performance technically and artistically". It was an excellent experience for all of us and we learned so much from both the adjudicators and from seeing other choirs. All in all an amazingly successful foray into the world of competition.
Presentation
Flowers and a gift token were presented to the lovely June as a Thank You for her Sterling work (pun intended!) as the choir's Treasurer over the last seven years. June has worked hard to keep the choir's finances on the straight and narrow and will be a hard act to follow.
Certificate presented by Felling Male Voice Choir
Flowers for Louth Concert
Sandra said that she would make corsages for the ladies of both choirs and buttonholes for the gentlemen. This was a wonderful idea and as there were so many required she agreed to hold workshops to teach the rest of the choir to make the corsages and then make them ready for the day. These photographs show some choir members who participated in the event.
Marie Curie Daffodils
At Glynis' instigation members of the choir made and sold daffodils in aid of the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal
Charities supported by Hackness Ladies Choir
The choir has supported local charities since its inception. Sometimes this has meant undertaking a fundraising concert, but each year money which has been earned by the choir by means of its own concerts, (which are held in Spring and at Christmas each year), is distributed to local charities. The total amount of money donated to these charities over a ten-year period is £12,600
The charities are chosen by ballot of all choir members and it is felt that the choir’s donations mean a lot to small, local charities.
Some of the charities to have benefited from this arrangement are:
In 2018
Basics Plus, Hackness Under Fives, Scarborough Disabled Swimming Club, Scarborough Poppy Appeal, Scarborough Talking Newspaper
In 2017
Alzheimers Society, Scarborough Survivors, Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue and Art Therapy Yorkshire
In 2015
Hospice at Home, Hackness Under Fives, Scarborough and Ryedale Care Resource, Snainton and Yorkshire Air Ambulance
In 2013
Swimming for the Disabled, St Martin’s Hospice Goodnight Sleep Appeal and YMCA
In 2012
DEBRA, Scarborough Hospital Children’s Ward and MENCAP
In 2010
The Rainbow Centre and Ellies Fund
In 2009
RSPCA, The Salvation Army and Scarborough RNLI
In 2008
Scarborough Blind and Partially Sighted and MS
In 2007
Macmillan’s, Brookleigh Day Centre and Cats’ Protection Pickering.
In December 2017, we decided to make further donations to local charities. Accordingly cheques were sent to; The Scarborough Stroke Club, Yorkshire Coast Sight Support, The Rainbow Centre, Derwent Valley Bridge Library and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. These local charities have written to thank the choir and to confirm just how much these donations help to keep them going.
